Sydney is such a geographically beautiful city but just a little too flashy for me. Love Melbourne or Adelaide for a visit but like you couldn't even live a small town anymore.
all the places i’ve lived in australia Sydney has the best localised commmunty feelings.
I loved living in newtown, it felt more like a fictionalised country town as far as community goes. Nothing like it in perth. don’t know why.
but tok busy for me now and also of course it’s changed a lot. still love visiting.

Anyone with half a brain saw this shitshow coming 12 - 13 years ago. I know coz I did.

I didn't give it much thought when the tax was introduced but I knew it would open up an illegal market, I had more thought there would be people selling bulk ciggies from their house and that they'd be really brazen about it because the penalties for the offending weren't harsh.
I didn't expect the advent of tobacconists and shops getting in on the game, nor did I expect the extent of violence/damage to property or the consolidation of the illegal market to a few players then to essentially one apparently.
Also didn't expect the government to keep hiking the tax continuously to such insane levels at the start (until it seemed to become apparent it was more about money than a deterrent) which I imagine just exacerbated the whole issue of the illegal market and whats now happened

The odd thing is that there are people with extra chromosomes but they don’t make a fuss out of it ,they just get on with their lives ,,,then we have people with normal defined chromosomes telling us we have to agree with whatever gender they demand of us to accept of them ,,,under threat of cancellation,,
Worst part is they want to brainwash children into believing their nonsense.
Well, fuck me!!!! Did we just find some common-ground?

Agreed.

I find it incongruous that the government hikes-up taxes on tobacco in the name of "disincentive" on tobacco-smoking as a "health issue", whilst at the same time banning vapes (a means of tobacco-smoking cessation) as a "health issue", as it's apparently drawing young people into nicotine addiction as a "gateway". This has been scientifically disproven.

It's ALL about public health, right? So, if that's the case, why doesn't the government simply ban all tobacco products & encourage smoking-cessation via the use of legal vaping products?

You can't buy a vaping product in Australia without jumping-through multiple hoops, but if you're over 18, you can simply walk into any supermarket & buy a carton of cigarettes, no questions-asked.

I smell the sweet & stenching aromas of the tobacco-lobby & huge tax revenue.....

I'll assume by your many youtube links to outrageous conservative propaganda that Youtube is where you source most if not all of your information.

Liberal Party Vetting Process Criticised After Candidate For Wills, Tony Mokbel, Apologises For Offensive Tweets

The Liberal Party is facing scrutiny over its preselection process after endorsing convicted drug trafficker Tony Mokbel as its candidate for the seat of Wills, with officials scrambling to contain fallout from several offensive tweets posted during his time as Australia’s most wanted fugitive.

The tweets, written while Mokbel was on the run in Greece in 2007, include references to former Victorian Premier John Brumby as a “skippy poof” and string of vulgar comments that brought into question former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd’s gender.

Mokbel issued a statement today apologising for the language, saying it does not reflect the tone or discipline he intends to bring to Canberra.

“Those tweets were made under extraordinary stress,” said Mokbel.

“I have undergone a significant period of personal growth since then and have engaged in sensitivity training. I have apologised and I think it’s best if we move on.”

Despite a criminal history that includes drug importation, money laundering, and a failed attempt to escape extradition via Lebanon, the Liberal Party insists Mokbel embodies the values of its founder, Sir Robert Menzies.

“Tony is a passionate advocate for personal responsibility, entrepreneurship and small government,” said a party spokesperson.

“He’s lived it. He’s built and scaled a successful enterprise, managed complex offshore logistics, and believes government should stay out of people’s lives.”

While critics have pointed to his 30-year sentence and the $1 million bounty once placed on his head, the party remains unmoved.

“The real concern here is the tweets,” said the spokesperson.

“But he’s taken ownership. That’s leadership.”

More to come.
