Interesting news. Strange they would leave if they are dominating the market. But also agree it is a good thing that this will hopefully lead to a more diversified market. However, the whole Samsung badging did make things a little less daunting for the newbie in choosing a fixture - in particular buying OS brands with spurious marketing claims as it is.

Next time I need lights, I'd be keen to self build. Seeing what others on here have done and from my own experience, doesn't look too hard with the parts available from local manufacturers

I don't use Samsung diodes the price turns me off for diy ,although there meant to have the best efficacy. That's only the higher binned diodes. Only the more expensive lights use top bid Samsung Diodes like HLG for eg. The cheaper lights that use Samsung are all lower binned diodes but because everyone so caught up on Samsung being the best because aÄŗ the HLG stuff is good the other lights are spooking the name but in reality won't perform like a HLG or similar. Top binned diodes from other brands are just as good

HLG has blown their rep. We are selling last of our stock at discount soon and wont be restocking. Will look at GML but to be honest we are reaching out to one of the top 5 Chinese manufactures to white label a light for us. 350/720/1000W. $600/$800/$1100.

Wow!!. I've always built my own lights for 3 reasons. A. cost. I can build 2 or maybe 3 lights for the price of 1. B serviceability. If a component goes out i know where to find and how to replace it instead of dealing with warranty etc. And C I get exactly what I need especially in the past with awkward shaped rooms. I personally like Bridgelux stuff. It's always priced well and performs great too, especially the thrive diodes

Yeah understandable but like cars, most people dont/cant fix themselves. We may investigate stocking parts for DIY light construction.

Can ya summarise so I donā€™t have to press play on that video? šŸ˜œ
X (GROK) said itā€™s because

Samsung's decision to leave the LED market was influenced by several key factors:

1. **Profitability and Market Competition**:
- Samsung faced intense price competition, particularly from Chinese manufacturers who offered products at lower costs. This led to reduced profitability in the LED sector, as noted in various reports. The aggressive pricing strategies made long-term profitability unattractive for Samsung.

2. **Strategic Realignment**:
- Samsung decided to focus on areas deemed more promising for future growth, such as power semiconductors and Micro LED technology. The company recognized that the LED lighting market was becoming saturated and less profitable, prompting a shift towards sectors with higher potential for innovation and revenue.

3. **Performance Issues**:
- Financial performance in the LED division did not meet expectations. Reports indicate that Samsung's LED business was struggling with declining competitiveness and profitability, which influenced the decision to exit this market.

4. **Market Share and Innovation**:
- Samsung's LED business had been losing market share globally. The company's emphasis on innovation and new technology developments like Micro LED and QD-OLED led to the decision to redirect resources from the less profitable LED lighting sector to these new technologies.

5. **Restructuring Efforts**:
- Samsung announced restructuring plans which included withdrawing from non-core businesses. The LED division was identified as such, with the company choosing to concentrate on more strategic areas like semiconductors.

6. **Global Market Trends**:
- The global LED market saw significant growth in China, with Chinese companies gaining substantial market share. This growth and the export dominance of Chinese LED products further pressured Samsung to reconsider its position in this market.

These factors collectively led Samsung to phase out its LED lighting business in stages, planning to cease production for various LED applications by specific deadlines up to 2030. This move reflects a broader strategy to adapt to changing market dynamics and focus on areas where Samsung can maintain or gain a competitive edge.

Drivers are the main drain on budget. If you could source a decent driver at a better price then HLG drivers that would be a game changer.

Do you go through either digikey or mouser? I've always found them to be well priced and reliable

Inventronics / Sosen are good drivers, pretty sure sosens are used on AC infinity lights (or they used to be), spiderfarmer had them for a while too but changed to another cheaper driver.

Way cheaper than meanwell but gotta buy from aliexpress / Alibaba China to get a good price though

Yeah that's what I mean by someone sourcing them here. The buying off Ali Express etc puts you off. One of the chinesium lights I put new boards on has a sosen on it and that been going for about 2 years when a mate had it prior to the boards crapping out and about 2 years since new boards were put on. ordering off AliExpress is ok. I got 4 heat sinks for the 288 style boards for the price of one from cutter.but had to wait a few weeks. Having someone here knowing it's only going to be a couple of days post or for me a drive across town to @Green Genius to get a replacement would be awsome.

Yeah Didgi Key but for a larger driver like a 480W your looking at 400ish. I use Didgey Key for the bridgelux strips which are cheap as and come in 1100mm long unlike cutters that are 560mm long and use the same diodes but have a red here and there and are the same price but only cover half the distance. I mostly rob parts from other LED's. For instance 2 of my lights are made from chinesium lights mates were throwing away because the boards had died. One has a meanwell Hlg on it. That had been in the rain in his rubbish trailer for 2 days( that's why meanwell have a good rep there tough) and the other has a sosen. But most of the other lights I have that use boards have drivers robbed from high bay led shed lights I got for 20 bucks each on marketplace. They have meanwell drivers the downside is they will only run one board so each light has 2 drivers on them. the upside all up they cost me around 180 all up for a light that performs as good as a HLG but i can buy parts or have parts if they shag themselves

I really wanted to make a new light from the Chinese shops on AliExpress but saw lots of comments saying that half the items never showed up. Didn't want to get scammed but I remember seeing one seller who calls himself Mr Moon selling all the gear cheap as, quantum boards and strips cobs etc, and all sorts of drivers too, they recently changed the checkout process and added the import duty fees on-top when ordering and it would have cost an extra few hundred just for that. Cart ended up vanishing anyway, was probably a blessing in disguise

I'd get drivers and heat sinks of ali. The boards or strips id get off reputable suppliers so you get quality diodes.for boards id go cutter 404. The have 404 bridgelux thrive diodes on the same area as hlg quantum that have 288 and when a mate tested them with his apogee sensor were better than his HLG using Samsung Diodes i use the 4000k with deep reds they are 62 bucks each. With the deep red they are about 3500k. And are 24v so can find more drivers to drive them as opposed to 48v Samsung. You can also use 6mm flat bar at 200mm wide for the heat sink. A 4m length is about 200bucks so you can make 13 heat sinks from a lenghth but its tricky to find and may need to order it in boads here is the link.
For strips I'll be moving away from cutter and going back to the gen 3 bridgelux
