kinda curious myself, i usually just wash it off with water and shake it dry or wipe it down with my tshirt lol. not an expensive unit or anything
Yeah there are a few brands around like Flareform, Hygen and a Blue Lab one that says its specifically designed for Bluelab pens which sounds like a bit of bs to me but I would like to actually know rather than guess🤷‍♂️
Just threw down $170 on one due to it having a replaceable probe option for $80 instead of burning through more money I dont have down the line🤔

I got sick of them ,,the probes get old and the liquid runs out ,
In summer I’d have it in a glass of solution but lose it from evaporation.

The liquid ph kit lasts years coz you only need a bottle each of up and down ,and they last years and the bottle of drops last even longer,,and stays stable for as long as I need,

I'm a savage. Haven't used one for years, and the times I did I was in bennos boat. Just wash it with a bit of distilled water and there we go haha.

Probably why the probe cracked after a few months. Never bothered to replace it, and don't bother checking feed any more.

Bluelab pen and bluelab storage solution. Put a few drops of storage solution in the cap after every use. Then store/hang the pen upright so the tip/probe doesn't dry out. Ours last around 3 years on average, when probe is cared for this way.
Keep your tips moist 🤣

Yeah I tried the paper / liquid ph test kits for my first three grows unfortunately maybe my ancient eyes or the fact I have halogen and led lights in house meant that I kept bugging my sweet patient wife with ‘ is this more green or yellow etc ‘ 🤣
After driving us nuts for far too long ended up getting my first pen and wammo my next lot of ladies looked considerably better from the start to the finish👍🏼

Mate I truly wish I had the feel / experience to just go by how the plants look but I honestly dont😞
I actually tried this current grow to just watch them and not use my poor old half broken pen, but as you will see in my next diary update they are not going so well atm.

i feel ya there with the paper. Every time I thought I had it down pat, someone else came along telling me it was closer to something else, so I just gave up. Depending on who was looking at it at the time it was either 6 or 7 lol.

Hey Old Fox my last Ph Pen was a Bluelab pen and I did just like you said to properly maintain it when I was using it regularly.
Unfortunately due to a sixteen month break from growing and smoking plus some curveballs thrown my way I completely forgot to check and replenish the liquid and the tip dried out🤬
Thats why I purchased another and was seeking any further advice on the storage solutions😃

After using dry nutes for so long now I can pretty much guesstimate the pH of the reservoir like Vin.

The nutes I use will naturally lower pH if using the right measurements, a few squirts of 50% phosphoric acid and its smack bang 5.8..

When I buy pH pens I'll get 3 at a time and see if they are all fairly consistent, you normally get a good one worth keeping, which will last atleast a few months before they start needing calibrating, like mentioned before you just keep the probe wet and they seem to last longer, I just chuck a bit of water in the caps which seems to work good

My first pen was a Milwaukie with a silicone boot which was brilliant, never leaked or evaporated. Then one day I was rinsing thoroughly and must have not screwed the battery compartment lid on tight enough and water got into the electronics, toasted the stability of the readings straight away.
Second pen the Bluelab excellent pen BUT probe lid design leaks the storage solution out of the four bottom corners due in part because of a silicone rubber insert🤬
Now this insert has a small cup inside which is where you place a couple of drops into it, however factors such as evaporation or not standing the pen perfectly vertical means its GUARANTEED TO LEAK the protective probe storage solution!!!!
Im absolutely sure that the company is NOT AWARE of this very poor lid design🤣

I use the cheapie ($40-ish) pens from homebrew suppliers.

Calibrate 1/mth in pH4/pH7 solutions. Rinse with plain water after use & keep the probe immersed in pH7 (upright) when storing.

As long as I'm in the ballpark (I use rainwater, so pretty consistently in the low-6's), I don't get anal about it.

You could of rehydrated the old one.
You probably still could.
Put it in water for 24 hours then try to calibrate it.
I had a blue lab that didn't get used for 2 years and rehydrated it and it was fine. Until I dropped it.

Yeah once you now the recipie for your area it's pretty consistent. I only usually check every 2 weeks or so to make sure the water hasn't changed. With my regime I add my nutes and 9 drops of PH down and it hits my desired PH.

I don’t use litmus paper ,,that’s different.
Liquid test kit has drops ,,and a small test tube ,,
After drops go in if it turns piss yellow it’s good to go ,,
Or use up or down to adjust the ph ,,
Each to his own though.
