I was looking into ways of cleaning up my tap water so I can use things like Dr Greenthumb myco and worm castings and to get the chlorine and chloramines(sorry if I'm wrong) out of my tap water. I was looking at Dr Greenthumbs site and they have a filter that attaches to the hose and I did a bit of google searching as ya do and I came across this stuff. I messaged them and they say it's safe for plants, it's for aquariums primarily but has anyone got any info. I'm not to sciencey to know but it's safe for fish..thanks in advance hey..

Prime is great for your aquarium, but way too pricey and overkill for what you want for your plants. Those filters that DG sells are more than enough, and they are just GAC (granulated activated carbon) filters and can be bought online for half the price.

Just have a search for caravan inline water filter (y)

I prefer to use the CBF (carbon block filter) version as they're only a bit more expensive, but filter more shit out.

I used CBF filters for my water back when I was keeping and breeding exotic fish. It was my experience that a carbon block filters removed both chlorine and chloramine and no other treatment was necessary 🤷‍♂️

doesn't adding humic acid neutralize Chlorine / chloramines in water ?

what about fluoride ?
Interesting, I did't know that about humic acid. Will have to look into it more, cheers (y)

I know ascorbic acid (Vit C) will remove chlorine also, not sure about chloramine. But it will also mess with your PH (temporarily)

No experience with the removal of flouride (RO?), as the weren't using it here yet back in my fish days.

Ok thanks, so I'll probably go back to my 1st plan and just like I've been doing with worm castings and just scratch the myco into the top layer of soil and water it in. Is that going to work?. It's always the way hey when you want to improve 1 thing you need another 3 things 🤣👍. Life hey..

i used to run a 4 stage ( i think ) RO system that kept a large drum constantly filled & i aerated it but without a lid on the drum i had the problem indoor growers have with green algae growth on the walls of the drum

if your just water only & utilize a drip system like blumats or something & drip water through mulch my understanding is the mulch will have the same effect as using humic acid , the mulch ( organic matter ) will neutralize the chemicals brfore they gas off , the mulch effectively becomes a filter

In Tassie they don’t use chloramine only chlorine well so our water report says and left out in a drum with a bubbler for 24hr gets rid of that I’m pretty sure?

yeah no worries , just pointing out fluoride is the more difficult chemical to remove

How to Remove Fluoride from Water?
Whilst some chemicals can be removed through filtration systems and jugs, fluoride proves to be a more difficult chemical to remove and is only achieved using specialized filters and reverse osmosis systems.

How do carbon filters remove fluoride from water?
Carbon filters can often reduce fluoride levels by 40% - 60% as well as other unpleasant odors and tastes.

You probably have more direct experience with this than me... Looks like granular activated carbon filters are what's needed for chloramine. So yeah probably a good bet that a decent activated carbon filter will remove most of the chloramine from your water.

have you looked into berkey filters ... not cheap, but seem to do the job.

just a heads up though ... if you are going to use the extra fluoride/arsenic filter (the while ones) probably best to get a bigger berkey than you think you need. the design of the berkeys with the major filter in the top section and the fluoride filter on the bottom, means that the capacity in the bottom (and the flow through from the top) is restricted a bit.

best solution would be to get a bigger (taller) berkey model, then things should move through way quicker.

I've been using the Dr Greenthumbs hose charcoal filter for a couple years in my organic soil grow. I have plenty of microbe action going on (e.g. mushrooms sometimes pop up), so it's getting most of the chlorine out. The only downside to this filter is that is only recommend to run at a litre a minute. I chuck it in a bucket and use my phone's timer. I'm in TAS, so I can only vouch for its efficacy on chlorine, not chloramine. It does nothing for fluoride, but I'm not worried about 5G or lizard-people either.

Thanks mate. I'm waiting on Dr Greenthumbs myco now and was looking into how to use it and some people use it with water(clean water)but some just mix it with the soil and water it in which is what I'm now going with. Just bcoz it's the easier way..oh yeah I've never used mycorrhizal of any kind before so I'm keen to see what all the fuss is about. Next is root and fruit roids they both look the part but I can only afford one item at a time..He has some nice stuff on his site..
