Gonna make some seeds

I'm going to have a go at growing some fem seeds for myself. Why? Seems a good idea to have a rainy day seed stash. A reliable seed source that I can always fall back on when finding seeds in AUS is difficult. No intention of becoming a famous breeder, just for me and maybe mates. Also, I like fiddling in my grow and new challenges. If I can grow them, I should be able to do some basic seed production!

My plan is to leave my regular 1.2*1.2m tent alone. Instead of messing with a good system, I'll have a smaller side tent for the breeding and seed production. This will keep my regular meds flowing and avoid pollen contamination. I'm thinking a small tent for 1-2 plants. Either the reversed male + female at the same time OR a reversed male to make & save pollen, then "he" is removed and the female added for pollination. I've got a few basic questions that maybe someone can help with...

Do plants need to be larger than a certain size to produce seeds or pollen? Big plants obviously produce more, but I don't need heaps. I'd be happy with a few dozen per run. That's faster than I pop seeds for growing. If I end up with hundreds, I'll donate them to people in need.

I've had bags with a handful of seeds before, but I never handled a fully and intentionally seeded bud. After I pluck the seeds, am I left with useable bud? Presumably all picked apart and messy, but still vaporizable or edible? I understand the STS treated plant should not be consumed, I'm just referring to the seed bearing plant.

I'm already using coots-like organic soil for my bud growing. I assume the same is fine for seed production, right? Do we tweak nutrient ratios for seeds?

Lighting. Does a seed tent need more/less/same light intensity as my grow tent? Do certain wavelengths/color-temperatures help seed production? I'm an HLG R-Spec LED guy right now, but happy to try other lights.

I'm open to any seed making advice the more experience people here have to offer...

Thanks in advance,
Poh Lynn Chuck

theoretically you would only need two to three clones of a desired female in the small tent
with one of them being used as the pollinator by reversing it with STS or Colloidal silver then allowing it
to naturally pollinate the other one or two females .
if timed right so that the fems are developing lots of pistils at the time of pollination you should get quite a few seeds .
probably growers on here who could maybe sort you out with a few cuttings ??

Plants need to be between 3 to 5 weeks in flower to get the success you need I’ve Benny breeding for years it’s not as easy as you think please make sure you have the shot together no need for anymore pollen chucked to start to try to breed

Are you reversing females? If so, how many different FEM strains have you made?

Don't worry here, you won't see the Veritas Seed Bank selling 3-seed packs for $200 of Zkittles Hype of the Week OG. I'm just making them for the experience and as a backup plan for when AUS seed banks are missing or out. A safety net of sorts.

That's the plan. Fem seeds are the most useful to me. I haven't settled on the parent strain(s) yet. I'm still contemplating making a S1 of a strain I already enjoy vs taking two strains I like and crossing. The process is the same either way, as far as I know. So I guess this is simply personal preference.

You can literally flower clones immediately and make seed, I would however recommend giving them at least a week of vege before though because the difference in seed production will be huge. Think of it as ensuring you get enough for your personal needs instead of risking it with smaller plants and go as big as you can. Worse comes to worse and you can donate the rest and get people growing your gear which is always a nice feeling.

Fully seeded buds produce fuck all smokeable material. You'll still get a few cones out of a gram but it's far less than sensi bud plus the taste is always off as you can taste the nuttiness of the seeds even after they've been removed. I've only had it a handful of times just to see what it was like and always went fuck it and turned it all into oil. As I never cared about the buds I grinded them into a fine mesh kitchen strainer which allows all the plant material to go through leaving behind the seeds and some thicker stems. This is by far the easiest method of separation I've found and if you're gonna smoke the bud it's already chopped and waiting for you as an added bonus.

You need the same lighting and growing conditions as you would growing any other cannabis plant. Nothing at all changes except that you need to wait until around the middle of flowering to introduce pollen to maximise your seed production and then you've got to wait about 5-6 weeks for the seeds to mature which could take you well over the normal flowering time. I personally recommend that you give them as long as you can because you can't over cook the seeds and the longer you wait the more fully mature seeds you'll produce. If you see a few brown seeds and just go fuck yeah and harvest though you could lose hundreds of seeds due to being immature so try to give them extra time if you can.

Keep the breeding tent well the fuck away from the larger one and do not visit them on the same day without showering and changing clothes first. Also try to always go the female tent first to help prevent contamination.

I've not played around with feminised seed production so I'll leave all that shit up to someone else. Have fun with it all though and good luck with all your future seed runs.

Reverse the plant you want to collect pollen off 1-2 weeks Before you flip the plants to be seeded. This will allow the reversed plant to start dropping pollen (hopefully) as the plants to be seeded are ready to be pollinated.

Lighting won’t effect anything.

S1 will generally produce more stable genetics (depending on the stability of the parents). Crosses will produce more variety within the seed stock.

Good info Seeded. Summary. Seeded buds don't make much smoke/vapable bud. I'll use what is available for edibles. Also, grow the seeded plant as big as my situation allows and don't jump the gun harvesting. Many and mature seeds is the goal! And lastly, be real clean so I don't accidently seed my bud tents.

Your info about the leftover bud made me realize I don't actually know the seed "picking" process. As in, how the seeds are physically removed from the buds. I imagine you could use a grinder, but I would need a much bigger grinder or accept it will take a long time and probably result in sore wrists (painful joints are my reason for growing in the first place). Using a metal grinder might also damage the seed's outer layer? Or is there another technique?

I've read this info elsewhere too and have been contemplating it. I need to have the pollen donor on 12/12 light about 2wks prior to the pollen recipient going into 12/12. To me that translates to two tents on different light schedules; one for each for the donor and recipient. Or, I could make pollen, save it an appropriate manner, then replace the donor with a recipient in the same tent, and finally pollinate at the appropriate time. The second option would take longer and probably be a bit more work, but saves money and floorspace by using a single tent/light/etc.

Does this sound right or have I missed something in the scheduling or logistics?

Good thread so far,I’m interested too. Seed supply is a bit erratic. I can’t see a bean brewing thread. I need a Dummy’s Guide. 😐

Throw the plant your reversing outside. The shock from going from 18+ hours of light to natural light hours will trigger the flower response and even in summer will be going once the 2 weeks have past and your flowering the recipients.

That's an idea, hmmm. I like the idea, but security and weather are concerns. If the tassie weather didn't kill the plants, the local kids would definitely recognize what the plant is!
